Our Story

The event started as a cancer walk in 2006 for those who had suffered from, or lost family or friends to the disease. Twenty six women from Hermanus hiked for five days from Struisbaai to Hermanus, carrying their daily provisions and traversing a sparsly inhabited area of the southern coast. These adventurous women set-up camp along the route on the coast each night, with a bakkie as back-up to transport their tents and camping equipment. R10 000 in funds were raised for CANSA Hermanus that year.  “We even shook tins in the streets of Gansbaai to collect donations and to raise awareness – just like students,” O’Nel remembers.

The following year, 2007 the distance was shortened to 100km over 4 days and 3 nights, the distance between the lighthouses at Agulhas and Danger Point and so the route was established. The rest is ‘her’story.

our purpose

The main purpose of the Walk in March every year is to raise funds for charities situated within the Overstrand District Municipality. The goal of this dynamic group of women is to bring light through fundraising in aid of charity projects. The Lighthouse2Lighthouse Ladies Walk aims to make a difference with each step they take along this beautiful landscape.



L2L Ladies Walk is registered as a Non-Profit Organisation (169-860) in terms of the Non-Profit Organisation Act 1997 on 20 April 2016 in South Africa. Our NPO registered name is “Lighthouse2Lighthouse Ladies” and shortened to L2L Ladies.

Our Constitution states that our aim is

“… to raise funds for a proposed project for a Non-Profit Organisation in the Overstrand area, selected by the ladies registered for the 100km annual walk from L’Agulhas Lighthouse to Danger Point Lighthouse.”

The Committee

The Lighthouse to Lighthouse Charity Ladies’ Walk is driven by a small committee of volunteers.

These women represent L2L as a Non-Profit Organisation. They do not benefit from or receive any of the funds raised nor do they have the rights over things that belong to the organisation (L2L Ladies Constitution 3.1, 3.2)

The committee manages the affairs of the organisation in accordance with the resolutions of the members, as taken from time to time at General Meetings. The committee members fulfill various profiles including finance, registration, catering, marketing & media, accommodation, events, fundraising, charities and special projects.


Regarding finances and reports, L2L Ladies Walk committee adhere to the following constitutional requirements:

  • Proper records and books of account(s) which reflect the affairs of the organisation
  • To compile a financial year report by an independent registered Accounting Office, stating if the financial statements of the organisation is consistent with its accounting policies and practices of the organisation. (Non-Profit Organisation Act 71 OF 1997, clause 17 & 18)
